SHANGRI-LA Asia has appointed its chairman and executive director, Kuok Hui Kwong, as chief executive officer with effect from 1 August, the company announced in a bourse filing on Wednesday, 16 July.
Kuok, 47, has served as executive director of the company since June 2016 and took on the role of chairman in January 2017. She is the daughter of Shangri-La founder Robert Kuok, Malaysia’s richest man.
“The combination of the roles of chairman and chief executive officer under the leadership of Kuok is expected to enhance the company’s strategic cohesion and operational execution by ensuring a unified and consistent vision across all levels of leadership,” the Hong Kong and Singapore-listed group stated.
Shangri-La Asia noted that Kuok has held a key leadership role in the business since her appointment as executive director, and has been “primarily responsible for formulating the company’s strategic priorities and steering the company towards its goals”.
The CEO position has remained vacant since December 2022, when former chief executive Lim Beng Chee retired after almost six years in the role.
Under her current employment contract, Kuok receives a monthly base salary of HK\$576,000 (US\$73,000), along with a discretionary bonus and pension entitlements. She holds a total direct and indirect interest in 95.57 million shares of Shangri-La Asia.
Kuok holds a Bachelor’s degree in East Asian Studies from Harvard University. She has also served as managing director and chief executive of SCMP Group, as well as a director of the Bangkok Post and China World Trade Centre Company within the past three years. - July 17, 2025
