MALAYSIA has taken a pioneering step in the region’s electric vehicle sector with the launch of Malaysian Standard (MS) 2818, the first battery passport standard for electric vehicles in ASEAN
Introduced by the Department of Standards Malaysia (JSM) in collaboration with the Malaysian Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), the standard aims to establish a transparent, sustainable, and efficient battery ecosystem for the country’s growing xEV industry.
MS 2818, launched at MITI ASEAN Day 2025, provides a comprehensive digital record to track key information throughout the lifecycle of an electric vehicle battery.
It focuses on enhancing traceability, improving information transparency, and supporting sustainable battery management from production to disposal.
“The launch of this standard is crucial in supporting Malaysia's commitment to reducing carbon emissions. It will encourage the growth and use of electric vehicles in the country, which aligns with our broader sustainability goals,” said Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister of Works.
The initiative positions Malaysia as a regional leader in xEV battery standards, reflecting the government’s broader Malaysia MADANI agenda to drive an innovation-based economy.
JSM also announced the official approval of three additional national standards in the food sector, aimed at strengthening product safety, quality, and international market competitiveness.
The additional standards are MS 1480 on food safety according to the HACCP system, MS 2683 on dehydrated kelulut honey, and MS 2782 on Apis sp. honey.Together with MS 2818, they underline Malaysia’s commitment to high-quality standards across sectors and serve as a catalyst for sustainable industrial and
