PADANG BESAR – Malaysia’s rubber industry is set to be rejuvenated with the setting up of a tyre factory, said Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali.
He expressed confidence that the industry will recover, and the commodity’s price will rebound.
“The Malaysian Rubber Board and Malaysian Rubber Council are mobilising efforts to revive and expand the tyre sector, as it has a large market value and can make a positive impact on the country’s rubber industry,” he told reporters after presenting donations to 100 rubber smallholders affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in Bukit Kerang near here today.
“We have exported our rubber for the production of tyres, but it is better to have our own downstream industry that produces such goods.”
He said the ministry has identified local investors keen on the project, and that details will be announced later.
“I will officially announce which company wants to work with us, the amount of investment involved, and the impact on rubber smallholders.”
He said the first meeting with interested investors will take place after Hari Raya Aidilfitri. – Bernama, May 9, 2021
