KUALA LUMPUR – The Finance Ministry has denied approving any loan for airlines affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nikkei Asia reported today that AirAsia Group Bhd had secured a RM1 billion lifeline in the form of a loan from the government to see it through the virus crisis.

“The ministry would like to clarify that it has not approved any government financing or guarantee for any airline,” said a ministry spokesman.

According to Nikkei Asia, the loan would be provided by a group of local banks under a government scheme, and 80% guaranteed by the ministry.

It said the loan would be disbursed by financial institutions under the RM50 billion Danajamin Prihatin Guarantee Scheme operated by state-owned financial guarantor Danajamin Nasional. – Bernama, October 13, 2020
