PENANG has proposed that the Home Ministry embark on its own registration drive of the Rohingya refugees to check against alleged social ills within the community.
With an online rebuke against the community for alleged abuse of their refugee status, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that registration by the authorities can ascertain their actual numbers and verify their whereabouts, including employment status, and access to education and healthcare.
"The registration is now done via the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), but it would be good if we (the federal government) also register them," Chow told a press conference.
The Rohingya are resettled in Penang at various localities, including in Butterworth, which is believed to have the highest concentration.
In a statement later, Chow said there is a need for closer federal-state collaboration on addressing the social dilemma linked to the Rohingya.
"We also want pragmatic and responsible solutions in addressing their issues."
Data from the UNHCR showed that 20,022 refugees are residing in Penang.
They are resettled in the localities of Kepala Batas, Tasek Gelugor, Bagan, Permatang Pauh, Bukit Mertajam, Batu Kawan, Nibong Tebal, Bukit Bendera, Tanjong, Jelutong, Bukit Gelugor, Bayan Baru and Balik Pulau.
Chow also said that the issues about the community must be driven by facts and not false impressions transplanted on social media.
"Penang will also work hard to protect social harmony and the safety as well as security of its citizens," said Chow. - June 17, 2026.
