SEKOLAH Menengah Kebangsaan Permatang Pasir will be representing Malaysia at the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) to be held in Houston from April 17 to 24 this year.

The school was given the honour after emerging champions in the recent FIRST Tech Challenge Malaysia Season 2023/24 after emerging as runners-up in the 2022/23 season.

Each team at the FTC will be made up of up to 15 members and will be challenged to build, programme and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format.

The team will be guided by coaches and mentors.

The FTC is aimed at encouraging students to develop science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills and practise engineering principles while realising the value of hard work, innovation and working as a team.

The eight members who are part of the SMK Permatang Pasir winning team are - Arash Badlishah Huzainol Hisham; Mohamad Harith Iskandar Mohd Azri; Aydin Mikail Mahadzir; Kasih Dania Aydina Mahadzir; Aninur Amylia Md Isa; Mumahhad Akmal Farish Effendy; and Muhammad Muizuddin Syahril.

The winning team recently had the opportunity to show off their winning creation to PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar during her visit to the school.

"It was a great honour and privilege for me to visit the school and have a chance to see the champion team's creation.

"Their dedication and commitment inspires us all and I wish them the best in Houston," she said.

Nurul also helped the school raise RM10,000 to fund their trip to the competition.

"The team needs funds for their trip and will be organising several events to help them raise the money they need.

“Their robotic creation is remarkable and I am confident they will make us proud at the world championships.

"I will do all I can on my part to assist them further," said Nurul, who is the former Permatang Pauh MP.

The school which was set up in 2009 and located along Jalan Permatang Pasir has about 760 students and 55 teachers. - The Vibes, February 24, 2024
