ALL schools, kindergartens, and childcare centres in Selangor will be closed if the Air Pollution Index (API) reading exceeds 200.
State Public Health and Environment EXCO, Jamaliah Jamaluddin, said the Selangor Education Department will continue to monitor the API readings and take appropriate action based on the level of pollution and the set regulations.
"For the education sector, schools, kindergartens and childcare centres must comply with the regulations in force based on the API readings.
"If the API reading reaches more than 200, the closure of schools, kindergartens and childcare centres will be implemented accordingly.
“Schools are also asked to ensure that the safety and health of students is always a priority throughout the haze period,” she said in a statement today.
Jamaliah said Selangor continued to strengthen the preparedness of all agencies following the rise in API readings in several areas in the state since this morning.
She said that as of 11 am, six areas recorded APIs at unhealthy levels, namely Johan Setia (180), Shah Alam (168), Klang (155), Petaling Jaya (157), Banting (155) and Kuala Selangor (155).
“Open burning is prohibited. Strict action will be taken against any party found to be committing open burning, in accordance with the provisions of the law.
“The public is asked to play their role by immediately reporting any open burning activities to the Department of Environment (DOE) via the DOE Hotline 1-800-88-2727 or the DOE eComplaint application.
“For fires that require immediate action, the public can call 999 or the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department line 1-800-88-994,” she said.
Jamaliah said that public health aspects remained the state government’s priority in the unhealthy API situation.
She said that the Selangor State Disaster Management Committee was ready to hand over supplies of face masks to District Disaster Management Committees to be distributed to civil servants and the public.
“The distribution will give priority to areas that recorded the highest API readings in Selangor, especially to the needy,” she said. – September 6, 2026
