KUALA LUMPUR – After 25 years, the Education Ministry will be raising the monthly allowances by 25% for wardens in boarding schools effective August 1.

Education Minister Datuk Mohd Radzi Md Jidin said under the new rates, chief wardens will receive RM350 in monthly allowances while regular wardens will take home RM300.

Previously, the RM240 monthly stipend had been a bone of contention for the wardens as the ministry had not revised the rates since April 1, 1997.

Radzi said the revised allowances will cost the government RM19 million.

“I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the Public Services Department and the Finance Ministry on the approvals given over the improvements for both parties,” he said in a video posted on Facebook, as quoted by The Vibes’ sister portal Getaran.

Previously, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s senior lecturer Anuar Ahmad told Getaran that the previous allowance rate was insufficient for the current costs of living, leading to many teachers refusing to take on the additional role of hostel wardens.

Meanwhile, Radzi said the Education Ministry will increase the number of wardens by 3,813, which is a 63% rise from the existing 6,055 wardens.

He said this would bring the number of total wardens to 9,868.

“With the increase in wardens, the rotation of wardens on duty can be done at all boarding schools under the ministry.

“The ministry will continue to make an effort to improve the portfolio of hostel wardens for boarding schools.” – The Vibes, June 24, 2022
