IPOH – Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2022 candidates in Perak who did not sit for the examination have been invited to participate in skills-based technical and vocational education and training (TVET) courses.

State Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said, however, it was up to the individuals whether they want to participate or not.

“When they did not sit for the SPM examination, the state and federal governments will always give them the space and opportunity to follow TVET courses to improve their academic achievements.

“This is because when they have certain skills, they can find employment based on those skills,” he told reporters after officiating the 3R (read, record and reward) Programme at the Dato’ Seri Husni Public Library in Chemor, here, today.

On Saturday (June 17), Khairudin was reported to have said that about 1,106 SPM 2022 candidates in the state did not sit for the examination, with some of them already working or having lost interest in pursuing their studies.

Meanwhile, Khairudin said more teachers were applying for early retirement than those facing compulsory retirement in the state but admitted to not having the statistics.

“One of the interesting factors about teachers applying for early retirement is that they no longer have responsibilities because their children have finished studying and are working. These teachers also cannot master or keep up with the development of the ever-dynamic education system,” he said.

He said that a detailed study on why teachers opt for early retirement should also be carried out because those who have served for a long time possess their own skills and expertise.

“For example, if the teacher is great in terms of teaching and learning, coaching and student development, then that teacher has expertise.”

The Education Ministry said the biggest number of teachers applying for early retirement over the past two years were those who taught Bahasa Malaysia and English.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek was reported to have said that, based on records, the number of education service officers applying for optional retirement based on the six main options was Bahasa Malaysia, which is 2,862, English (1,146) and Mathematics (1,015).

Fadhlina said this was followed by Islamic Studies (755), Science (629) and History (483) teachers while, for this year, the approval of optional retirement applications is still under consideration by the central agency. – Bernama, June 21, 2023
