KUALA LUMPUR – The residents of Sekinchan, known as a fishing town and Selangor’s “rice bowl”, are largely unaffected by the Covid-19 lockdown in place until June 14.
Although tourism is a source of income for some in the area, the majority of locals continue their work as padi farmers or fishermen.
A recent survey by The Vibes shutterbug SAIREIN NAFIS found life in Sekinchan to be mostly normal, barring some businesses shut in line with lockdown rules.
Farmers continue to cultivate their crops, fishermen are still going out to sea, and people drop by grocery stores to buy goods.
Previously, tourists responded positively to the idea of having chalets among the padi fields.
The lockdown has, however, made the town, usually busy with holidaymakers and outsiders visiting to buy fresh fish, much quieter.
Sekinchan also made the news on Thursday due to a Covid-19 outbreak said to have originated at a mahjong centre, where 45 out of the 240 people screened tested positive for the virus.
It was also reported that a few close contacts allegedly stayed away from testing.
To date, Sabak Bernam, where Sekinchan is located, has recorded a total of 1,180 infections, 70 of which are still active, and eight deaths. – The Vibes, June 6, 2021
