PETALING JAYA – Separately, nasi lemak and durian are two Malaysian delicacies that have undergone various “experiments” by chefs and eatery operators.

From nasi lemak burger to nasi lemak ice-cream, durian cendol to durian cheesecake, we would think that we’ve seen it all.

That is not the case because the one thing we haven’t seen is the two coming together in one dish.

Amidst the many fusion of cuisines that we have from Perlis all the way to Johor as well as Sabah and Sarawak, a cafè in Kuala Lumpur dared to take the road not taken with their latest offering: nasi lemak durian.

Imagine a plate of nasi lemak, with a side of durian. That is what In Between X Briyani Mak has fearlessly introduced in their menu apart from their usual nasi lemak and biryani fare.

As seen in a video by KL Foodie, the eatery offers a selection of Musang King, XO, Blackthorn and Tekka to be paired with its nasi lemak.

The restaurant is located along Jalan Titiwangsa.

Its nasi lemak durian is not so much a fusion of the two, but looks more like one complementing the other. The nasi lemak is served with one clove of durian served as a separate side in the same dish.

The durian is not cooked with the rice or the sambal, which means you can just have it as a dessert after you’re done with the nasi lemak.

For those brave enough to eat both together, you’re more than welcomed to do so. The shop closes every Monday.

In the comment section, one user remarked that the dish was still incomplete.

“This is not complete, should add cheese,” said Muhammad Zaimi, referring to the unique behaviour of Malaysians pouring cheese on almost everything.

Another user remarked that the Malaysian menu was being destroyed.

However, it deserves a mention that durian is the main ingredient in tempoyak, which many Malaysians have as a condiment with rice.

Perhaps nasi lemak durian isn’t that weird after all. – The Vibes, September 24, 2023
