HOSPITAL Sultan Zainal Abidin (HoSZA) has achieved a major medical breakthrough with the successful completion of its first-ever pacemaker implantation procedure.
The operation was carried out at the hospital’s Invasive Cardiac Laboratory (ICL) from 8am to 4.45pm on Monday. It was led by Visiting Consultant Cardiologist from Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ), Dr Ahmad Wazi Ramli, and supported by a dedicated 17-member team comprising medical officers, X-ray technologists, and assistant medical officers.
In a statement issued by HoSZA’s Corporate Communications and Customer Service Unit, the hospital described the achievement as a key milestone in strengthening its cardiology services.
“This marks an important step forward in expanding access to advanced cardiac care, especially for heart patients in the East Coast region,” the statement read.
The pacemaker is a small medical device implanted under the chest skin to regulate and normalise abnormal heart rhythms.
“It delivers electrical impulses through electrode wires to ensure the heart beats at a proper rate,” the hospital explained.
The procedure is expected to pave the way for more complex cardiac treatments at HoSZA, offering new hope to patients requiring long-term heart rhythm management. - September 9, 2025
