PENANG has been named the best street food destination in Asia by British-based leisure and entertainment platform - Timeout which described it as affordable, accessible and delicious.

State executive councillor for tourism and creative economy, Wong Hon Wai said the honour is another testament to the state's reputation as a choice tourism destination.

Katie Lockhart from Timeout said “When asked to choose one place to eat street food for the rest of my life, it’s Georgetown, Penang – hands down.

“A cultural mix of Malay, Chinese, Peranakan and Indian, there’s a laundry list of specialities to try here, including char kuey teow (a stir-fried noodle dish), assam laksa (a sour style of laksa), roti canai (Indian flatbread), and hokkien mee (a prawn noodle soup).”

Others on the top 10 list include Hanoi, Singapore, Mumbai and Chiangmai.

On the Malaysia Day celebrations in Penang tomorrow, Wong urged everyone to be patient in view of the anticipated traffic congestion.

“We will work closely with the police and other relevant authorities to manage the situation and hope everyone will cooperate and be patient,” he said. – September 15, 2025
