PENANG Infrastructure Corporation Sdn Bhd (PIC) recently spent time and offered financial support to children of inshore fishermen and traders here.
PIC did this with the help of Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd, the project delivery partner of the man-made Silicon Island reclamation project.
PIC chief executive officer Datuk Seri Farizan Darus said the aid was part of their commitment to help residents in Permatang Damar Laut, the launchpad site for the major reclamation project to erect the Silicon Island.
Upon completion, the island is expected to drive the next stage of Penang's macro development by stimulating growth in the real estate and manufacturing sectors.
Farizan handed out aid to 18-year old Ang En Yang, who wants to uplift his family's status while honouring his father's ensuring work as an inshore fisherman.
Currently pursuing a Diploma in Accounting at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), En Yang is known among his peers as a determined youngster who believes that education is the key towards changing his family’s future.
His father Ang Tau Yean from Teluk Kumbar, has spent over 30 years braving the open seas to provide for his family.
Witnessing his father’s perseverance has netted behind En Yang’s determination to succeed.
En Yang was among 12 tertiary students who received the Higher Education Admission and Excellence Award from PIC during a Deepavali celebration held at the Fishermen Resources Centre in Permatang Damar Laut.
The award, introduced under the Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP), aims to encourage and support the children of fishermen who pursue higher education.
Fisherman Ammar Ismail, 59, from Pulau Betong, was all smiles as two of his children were also recognised.
His son Muhammad Sufi Ammar, 18, received the Higher Education Admission Award for his Diploma in Electronic Technology at Balik Pulau Vocational College, while his daughter Nur Afiqah Ammar, 24, received the Excellence Award for completing her Degree in Education at Universiti Sains Malaysia.
“I’m very happy that my children are doing well in their studies. Education is very important to be successful in life. Their success is our greatest gift,” said Ammar.
Five fishermen also received food baskets in conjunction with the festive celebration.
Farizan also noted that the celebration showcases the country's strong appreciation of the diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
"It is such spirit of togetherness which allow us to plan for development and to share the prosperity with others.
“Congratulations to all the students and their proud parents. However, this is only the beginning as the journey ahead is far from over,” he said.
Farizan also highlighted the growing importance of education in today’s competitive landscape, reminding students that strong academic performance remains a key stepping stone to future opportunities. - October 30, 2025.
