TRADERS are weighing movements in currencies, commodities and equities as financial markets contend with geopolitical tensions, interest rate expectations, oil prices and an uneven global economy.

The International Monetary Fund expects the world economy to grow 3% this year, although the outlook differs across countries and regions.

In Asia-Pacific, attention is centred on monetary policy, currency movements, technology demand and the performance of major stock markets.

Economic picture differs across Asia

Japan and China, two of the region’s biggest economies, are sending different signals.

The Bank of Japan expects underlying inflation to gradually move towards its 2% target. It has said future policy decisions will depend on developments in economic activity, prices and financial conditions.

The central bank is also watching movements in foreign exchange rates and crude oil prices, as well as demand from the artificial intelligence sector.

China’s economy, meanwhile, expanded 4.3% year-on-year in the second quarter, slowing from 5% in the first quarter, according to official figures.

Growth for the first half of the year was estimated at 4.7%.

Developments in China matter beyond its borders, particularly for economies closely tied to Chinese trade and demand for commodities. They can also influence the yuan and broader market sentiment.

Technology adds another layer

Stock markets in Japan, China, Hong Kong and elsewhere in the region are being watched for signs of how investors view growth, exports, consumer spending and technology investment.

Artificial intelligence has become part of that picture as demand for technology products and services feeds into economies linked to the global supply chain.

The IMF has highlighted the impact of AI-related demand, while the Bank of Japan has also pointed to stronger demand in the sector as a support for domestic economic activity.

Gold and oil remain on the radar

Oil prices remain important for Asian economies that rely on imports, particularly when higher energy costs begin to feed into businesses and consumers.

Gold, meanwhile, continues to attract investment interest in the region.

The World Gold Council expects investment activity in Asia-Pacific to play a larger role in gold demand growth in the second half of 2026. Gold-backed exchange-traded funds in Asia recorded net inflows of 70 tonnes during the first six months of the year.

For traders, the appeal of each market depends largely on what is moving it. Currency prices are closely tied to interest rates and central bank policy, equities respond to expectations for companies and economies, while gold and oil can be heavily influenced by inflation, supply and geopolitical developments.

One platform, several markets

The shifting backdrop has also kept multi-asset trading platforms relevant to traders looking to access different markets.

JustMarkets offers more than 260 CFD instruments covering forex, gold, oil, indices, stocks and other markets.

The broker provides access through MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, Web Terminal and its JustMarkets Trading mobile application.

It said the range gives traders the option of accessing different asset classes through a single trading environment. - September 23, 2026
