GEORGE TOWN – The highest level of public and private sectors are working closely in organising the Penang International Science Fair. It is a clear indication of Penang Science Cluster’s important mission of “Inspiring Innovation” among our talent pool.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the collaboration between the state government and the industries form the backbone of the Penang Science Cluster.
“This objective can only be met if we remain steadfast on sparking interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by creating innovative mindsets in our young students through unique and enriching hands and experiences,” he said.
Chow said this while virtually announcing the Penang International Science Fair 2021. It is jointly organised by the state, Penang Science Cluster and the industries.
Present were Penang Science Cluster director Datuk Yoon Chon Leong, Ooi Peng Ee, chief executive officer of Penang Science Cluster, Bharathi Suppiah, deputy general manager of Chief Minister Incorporated, Richard Chung, general manager of Penang STEM and Johnny Ong, general manager of Penang Math Platform.
“Last year, in the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, our lives were turned upside down. Lockdowns were imposed, the livelihoods of many in our community were threatened, education for our students was significantly disrupted and the supply chain disruptions severely affected the industry.
“The annual Penang International Science Fair was not spared too as it had to be cancelled last year. It was, indeed, a disruptive time for all of us.
“Fast forward to today. Now, we are in a better situation, 98% of Penang’s adults are fully vaccinated and we are ramping to over 90% for our 12-to-18-year-olds. Together with the continued wearing of masks and social distancing, all of us are adjusting to a new normal, what I call ‘Living with Covid’,” he added.
Chow said likewise, the Penang International Science Fair has to adapt too, taking on virtual characteristics while retaining the key feature of stimulating hands-on experiences for students.
“Adapt it must, but the most important thing is that the Penang International Science Fair is back this year to continue with the task of inculcating an interest and a love for the sciences among our future talents.
“This is because the state government and industries in Penang recognise the importance of developing our young students, who as our future talents, will fuel the growth of our industry, economy and country in time to come,” he added.
Chow expressed his gratitude to Penang Science Cluster, the companies represented for the event today and their employees and volunteers from the community for providing the leadership and energy to make this year's Penang International Science Fair another milestone for STEM education in Penang and Malaysia.
The 9th Penang International Science Fair will be held from Saturday, November 20 to Sunday, December 5, at the Setia, Spice Arena in Bayan Lepas. – The Vibes, November 4, 2021
