THE 10th edition of the Goethe Institut’s Science Film Festival, which has run from October 1 to December 20, 2020, will be different from usual as Goethe-Institut takes the innovative step of bringing the films to Malaysian students via online streaming.
The Science Film Festival is a celebration of science communication in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
It promotes science literacy and facilitates awareness of contemporary scientific, technological and environmental issues through international films with accompanying educational activities.
The event has grown considerably since its first edition in 2005, becoming the largest event of its kind worldwide.
This year, the theme of the event is Sustainable Development Goals.
In 2015, 193 countries adopted a vision for the world in 2030. The vision is ambitious: a world of peace and prosperity built on a foundation of a healthy natural environment.
A world of improved health, access to quality education, good jobs and reduced inequalities, among other aspirations.
To achieve that future, we must look at the world today, understand the possibilities for change and take action to make that change happen.
In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, screenings will only take place virtually this year.
The Malaysian selection of the Science Film Festival 2020 has therefore been made available online.
A total of 30 Science Edutainment Films divided into different age groups will be available for online screening. Registration can be completed here.
All films are synchronized or subtitled into the English languages where necessary to offer access without language barriers.
An essential part of the Science Film Festival is curating activities that supplement the themes explored in the films, through hands-on experiments, projects or learning games offered for young audiences at the screenings.
Festival partners from all participating countries exchange and adapt ideas for educational activities, which supplement the films at an international workshop and subsequent national workshops.
Facilitators, teachers and parents can find activities that connect to early learners, primary and secondary school films of the Science Film Festival.
These include learning games, projects and hands-on experiments that can be done before or after visiting the festival to enrich the experience. - The Vibes, November 21, 2020
