WHAT started off as a tangent – a joke within a joke – became reality, when ubiquitous potato crisp brand unveiled Mr. P, a full body mascot. Up to this point the physical dimension of the mysterious character was unknown, but no more.

A few weeks ago, John Oliver, the comedian and host of HBO’s popular Last Week Tonight had – during one of his trademark asides – remarked on the mysterious nature of the “Pringle guy”.

He joked, “... is he tall or short, does he have a lot of body hair or is he completely smooth, when you be able to tell me what his nipples look like, are you talking hours or are you talking days.”

This past weekend, despite the show going on break until early next year, Oliver released a short follow-up video on YouTube where he elaborated on the enigma that is Pringles.

After sharing a bunch of hilarious fan art that guessed what the Pringles mascot looked liked, Oliver challenged the brand’s official social media to respond to the dilemma, offering to give US$10,000 (RM40,630) to the charity, Feeding America.

What’s amusing is Oliver had absolutely nothing positive to say about Pringles as a food product, yet managed to get the brand to play along for charity.

Unfortunately Pringles is apparently not changing it’s motto to, ‘“He single, he Pringle, he ready to mingle.” – The Vibes, December 10, 2020
