WOMEN’S rights group, Sisters in Islam (SIS) joined the chorus to hit out at PAS over its recent suggestion that polygamy was a solution for unmarried women aged 30 and older in Malaysia.
Describing Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man’s remarks as a “desperate cry for attention” SIS said the suggestion showcased PAS’ clear lack of sensibility and disconnect from the more urgent needs of society.
PAS deputy president recently said in parliament that the high number of unmarried women in the country was “cause for concern” and that polygamy was a “way out”.
He suggested the government provide moral support for men capable of and qualified to marry more than one woman.
“It is important for the public to discern the true nature of PAS. They are a failed opposition focused more on inconsequential matters than fulfilling their responsibility of providing an effective check and balance.
“In reality, the ramifications of polygamy, extensively examined by SIS, unveil the intricacies and hardships endured by wives in such unions,” SIS said in a statement.
SIS cited data from its free legal clinic, Telenisa, which revealed that in 2022, 24% of polygamous marriages occurred without the wife’s consent, 18% of husbands in polygamous marriages failed to provide maintenance to their wives, and 14% neglected child maintenance.
Others who also criticised Tuan Ibrahim for his statement included Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh who asked him why being single was a problem.
Taking to social media, she said tying the knot late was not a problem that needs solving.
