SARAWAK PKR chairman Roland Engan has called on the state and federal Transport Ministry to reduce airfare between the state and Kuala Lumpur.
The exorbitant fares were staying high and ordinary Sarawak people were suffering, he said.
“A Sibu-KL-Sibu ticket costs almost RM2,500 and it has been like this for months.
“The ministers must act to get the airlines to lower the fares now,” he said in a statement.
On November 18, The Vibes, quoting the Sarawak United Peoples Party, reported flights from KL to Sarawak destinations like Sibu were more expensive than KL-Hong Kong fares.
The party’s Dudong division has been sharing this concern over social media, calling for immediate remedial measures.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said expensive flights between Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak were due to aviation fuel costs and the weak ringgit.
“Airlines have been hit (by these factors), affecting flight costs,” he said.
Hasbi said the federal ministry was aware of the high airfare and was looking into ways to lower prices for the festivities. – The Vibes, November 28, 2023.
