A CAMPAIGN to encourage more Chinese to join the civil service will be held in various parts of the country, starting with Melaka this Sunday.

The prime minister's political secretary, Chan Ming Kai said the campaign is being held following the low number of Chinese who are interested in being civil servants.

According to him, the Chinese should discard the belief that they are unable to become civil servants or that the vacancies are only allocated to certain people.

Chan told Sin Chew Daily that during the campaign, Chinese civil servants will share their job experiences with others keen to be part of the civil service.

The campaign is jointly organised by the office of the PM's political secretary and Media Chinese International Limited.

It will also be held in Kuantan on March 16, followed by Petaling Jaya, Segamat, Muar, Johor Bahru, Pontian, Kluang, Ipoh, Taiping, Teluk Intan, Butterworth and Kangar.

"If nothing is done, the situation will become worse," said Chan.

Based on the latest intake of civil servants by the Public Services Commission, he said, a total 17,386 Chinese applied for positions and 4,285 were shortlisted for interviews.

Of the 4,285 applicants, 3,708 attended interviews and 1,634 were eventually recruited.

The recruitment rate for shortlisted Chinese applicants was 44.1 per cent, slightly lower than that for Indians at 44.2 per cent.

"However, it is significantly higher than the recruitment rate for the Malays at 13.8 per cent, added Chan.

Currently, the highest position held by a Chinese in the civil service is Chua Choon Hwa, the Deputy Secretary-General (Strategic), Ministry of Women, Family & Community Development.

Former Penang police chief, Datuk Khaw Kok Chin who was just promoted to director of the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department is another Chinese holding a senior public office.

Last year, Chan also organised a campaign to recruit more Chinese to join the police. - The Vibes, March 2, 2024
