THE SELANGOR state assembly representative for Kuala Kubu Bharu, Lee Kee Hiong, died today. She was 58.

The demise of the of the DAP legislator was announced by her party colleague Teo Nie Ching, who is the deputy communications minister, on Facebook this morning.

Selangor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari expressed his condolences in a statement to the family of the deceased.

Lee had served as a representative for Kuala Kubu Bharu since 2013.

It is understood that she had been hospitalised prior to her passing away. According to reports she had been battling ovarian cancer since 2020.

Amirudin described her death as a great loss for various parties, and especially so for the constituents of Kuala Kubu Bharu whom she had long represented and helped even before she first won the seat.

"On behalf of the Selangor State Unity Government, I express my condolences to the family of the late Mrs. Lee Kee Hiong, as well as all friends and members in the Democratic Action Party (DAP) who lost an illustrious personality," Amirudin stated.

Meanwhile, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook said that he had heard about Lee's demise with a heavy heart.

"As a DAP activist since 1993 she had undertaken her duties with a complete sense of trust and responsibility in the struggle for the Malaysian people.

"Since she was entrusted to serve as Kuala Kubu Bharu's representative in 2013, comrade Kee Hiong had also provided the utmost service to the local people," he said.

"Her passing is a great loss for all of us," he added, conveying the condolences of the national DAP leadership.

In the Selangor state election in August last year, Lee had successfully defended the seat by defeating Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Teoh Kien Hong with a majority of 4,119 votes.

Hulu Selangor parliamentary coordinator Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan, who is also PKR’s Hulu Selangor branch chief, said that Lee breathed her last in the presence of close family members and colleagues.

“YB Lee Kee Hiong is by no means an unfamiliar name to the community in Hulu Selangor,” he said in his tribute to her.

“Her determination and strength in helping us during the last general election is highly appreciated. Thank you YB, your service will always be remembered.” – The Vibes, March 21, 2024
