SOME 5.5 square km of forest fires have been successfully doused near the Sarawak-Brunei border following intense aerial water bombings.

About 120 metric tonnes of river water was used over this massive hotspot to put out the flames, said the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) team at the forest fire sites.

MMEA director for Miri Captain Mohd Shafie Paing said the fires were put out using water from Sungai Adong.

"The aerial water bombings were successful. So far, a hotspot has already doused and we will continue with these aerial water bombings," he said in a press statement.

On March 27, the MMEA detected another huge fire spreading very near a school, Sekolah Kebangsaan Kuala Baram.

The new forest fire detected near the school was estimated to be at least 60 acres in size.

That is roughly the size of 60 football fields combined.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department in the meantime said ground teams are still fighting the fires in the peat forests. - The Vibes, March 31, 2024
