KERSON Media Global Sdn Bhd, the organiser of the 16th edition of the George Town Festival (GTF) has expressed regret that a controversial teaser video to promote the culture and heritage extravaganza had hurt the feelings of certain quarters.
It also tendered an apology, saying the clip was not meant to offend anybody.
In a statement, Kerson Media Global said it has since removed the promotional clip from its social media channel.
The Penang Malay Association had earlier pointed out that Malay culture, arts, and heritage elements were missing from the promotional clip.
Every effort was undertaken to ensure the planning and promotion of GTF was inclusive of all communities living in George Town, its organiser said, adding that it had sought Malay representation as it did in previous editions.
For this year’s event, there are eight events for GTF that showcase Malay culture, running from July 19 to 28.
Meanwhile, George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), the authority over the Unesco World Heritage Site, has advised Kerson Media Global to expand the range of Malay programmes in GTF and resolve any misgivings that have arisen over the controversial video clip.
GTWHI issued a statement to say it was committed to conserving and promoting harmonious relationships between all races living in the heritage enclave.
“We subscribe to the good practices of the heritage enclave and strive to showcase George Town Heritage City as a diversified habitat,” it said.
GTWHI said it wanted all races to be part of the GTF extravaganza, which includes live performances and exhibitions. A total of 80 events are planned this year, of which 53 come from the respective local communities. – July 16, 2024.
