CAP calls on Penang government to ensure better upkeep of its roads
The recurrence of potholes and uneven surfaces only goes to show that the work carried out is shoddy - October 3, 2024

THE Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has called on the Penang Government to review the standards of its road construction and maintenance given the numerous potholes and uneven road surfaces that pose a hazard to road users.

CAP president, Mohideen Abdul Kader said in a recent survey conducted by CAP, it was found that among the main roads damaged are in Jalan Thean Teik, Jalan Paya Terubong, Jalan Jelutong, Jalan Perak, Jalan Bukit Gambir, and several other roads in residential areas.

"With the large increase in vehicles, particularly private cars, it is critical for roads to be well maintained.

"Contractors who are tasked to construct, upkeep, and maintain the roads should be answerable for any shoddy road works that result in potholes and uneven road surfaces.

The recurrence of potholes and uneven surfaces only goes to show that the work carried out is shoddy," he said.

He said it should be made their standard operating procedure to conduct weekly inspections on all the roads.

"The State Government should emulate our neighbouring country, Singapore, in being able to keep their roads in tiptop condition.

"Damaged roads are hazardous to road users particularly, if Penang anticipates a greater influx of tourists during the holiday season or festivals.

"Immediate remedial measures should be taken to ensure that our roads do not pose a danger to road users. Moreover, uneven road surfaces and potholes cause damage to the suspension and shock absorbers of a vehicle," he added.
