THREE primary school children rescued from a car that plunged into Sungai Sundar in Lawas, Sarawak this afternoon died at the Lawas Hospital.

They died this evening, the Lawas Fire and Rescue Department said in its updated reports.

The deceased are Mohamad Nazran Awang Matasan, 10, Mohd Fayard Mohd Azmi, 5 and Eryna Akifa Imani Zukri, 8.

Mohd Fayard Mohd Azmi was the son of the 38-year-old driver, identified as Muhamad Azmi Bidin.

Another child, Madieenatul Munawarah Mohd Azmi, nine, is still in hospital.

It was earlier reported that a Perodua Alza with nine passengers and the driver veered off the road and plunged into Sungai Sundar.

Villagers managed to get all the victims out of the sinking car, but the three children were trapped inside for a longer period.

The children were rushed to the Sandar Clinic and later to the Lawas Hospital where they died due to complications.

The incident occurred at about 1.15 pm in Kampung Awat-Awat near Sarawak’s border with Sabah. - October 18, 2024
