UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail is convinced that former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak’s apology for the 1MDB scandal is genuine.

"I believe the statement was made sincerely and came from the heart and reflected Najib's good intentions, though certain parties had taken advantage of him.

"His public apology to Malaysians is not about seeking sympathy but rather reflects the actions of a person with a big heart," he said.

He said Najib’s statement also showed that the former premier had always prioritised the people’s interests and certain irresponsible parties had exploited this.

"I hope that Najib will be freed and that justice will prevail against the masterminds behind the 1MDB scandal," said the Pahang Menteri Besar.

Yesterday, Najib issued an apology for all that transpired during the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) financial scandal.

He asserted his innocence, claiming he was deceived by fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) and his associates.

Najib said he had reflected on the scandal, which US authorities had dubbed the largest kleptocracy, over the past 26 months.

“It pains me every day to know that the 1MDB debacle happened under my watch as finance minister and prime minister.

“For that, I would like to apologise unreservedly to the nation,” he said in a statement read out by his eldest son Datuk Mohamad Nizar at the Kuala Lumpur High Court. - October 25, 2024
