POLICE in Sibu, Sarawak have arrested a 14-year-old girl and 44-year-old man for allegedly dumping a newborn baby boy into a vegetable basket before leaving it in the back lanes of the town.

The duo are under remand pending further probes into the discovery of the baby yesterday, Sibu police chief Zulkipli Suhaili said today.

"The case has been classified as concealing a birth and abandoning a baby. The baby was discovered by the public yesterday morning in a vegetable basket along Jalan Tong Sang.

"The baby weighs 1.48kg and is believed to have been born about 24 hours ago.

"The baby has been sent to the Sibu Hospital,” Zulkipli said in a statement.

The baby still had his umbilical cord and uterus tissues attached, he added.
