THE new Sarawak airline following the acquisition of MASwings has been named AirBorneo.
Sarawak Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg, said AirBorneo is ready to create a balance between connectivity, affordable fares, and economic benefits.
"AirBorneo will operate as a full-service carrier (FSC) to significantly enhance the passenger experience through superior in-flight services," he said.
He was speaking at the SPA signing ceremony between the Sarawak government and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) at a leading hotel in Kuching.
"This strategic move will help position Sarawak as an aviation hub for Borneo and a gateway to Asean.
"It will also help unlock economic opportunities and enhance air connectivity to both domestic and international destinations," Abang Johari said.
He said this also empowers Sarawak to have control of and manage its air connectivity and tailor services that meet the needs of its people and economy.
"With plans for new international routes and key markets, we will alleviate Sarawak into a prominent player in the regional aviation sector.
"While maintaining its crucial Rural Air Services (RAS) to remote areas, the airline will gradually expand its network and offer international routes to enhance Sarawak's global accessibility," he added.
Meanwhile, MAG said the transfer is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Throughout this period, MASwings will continue operating as usual with no disruptions to flight schedules. – February 12, 2025
