THOSE caught disposing of waste illegally in Selangor will face stricter penalties, with fines reaching up to RM100,000 and a minimum prison sentence of five years, following the enforcement of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672).

Datuk Ng Suee Lim, the State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Local Government, shared that both the state and federal governments are currently in discussions to ratify this Act, aiming to improve waste management procedures and strengthen enforcement measures.

"Once we successfully ratify Act 672, we will utilise the provisions within the law to enforce stricter penalties, including fines of up to RM100,000 and a minimum prison sentence of five years," Ng stated.

He said the ratification of the Act would significantly aid in addressing the growing issue of illegal waste disposal by enhancing enforcement efforts.

Ng said this during his closing speech at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, in response to the royal address of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

He explained that the ratification would also improve existing regulations, such as the 2007 Local Government Small Laws on Waste Collection, Disposal, and Garbage Dumping, which currently imposes a fine of RM1,000 under the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171).

Earlier, Selangor's Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, had indicated that the state government is set to finalise the decision to adopt Act 672, with plans to implement it early this year.

The adoption of this Act is expected to significantly reduce the costs associated with solid waste management, which is currently borne by the state through the KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM). – February 25, 2025
