AN elderly man with a history of 14 criminal and drug offenses was fatally shot during a confrontation with police in Taman Molek, Johor Bahru early this morning.
The incident occurred at 3:10 am when the 63-year-old local reportedly opened fire on officers who were attempting to detain him for a routine check.
Johor Police Chief, Datuk M Kumar, explained that the incident unfolded as a team from the D9 Criminal Investigation Division was on patrol in two police vehicles.
"Officers noticed a man riding a Honda Vario motorcycle suspiciously on Jalan Persiaran Bumi Hijau, Taman Molek.
“They pursued him and managed to stop the motorcycle in a nearby area.
“As the officers approached to conduct an inspection, the motorcyclist suddenly fired several shots, prompting the police to return fire to protect themselves until the situation was under control," he stated.
Kumar confirmed that the man was shot and died at the scene.
A Smith & Wesson pistol was discovered near the suspect, along with four live rounds and two spent casings.
The investigation revealed that the suspect had a lengthy criminal history, including charges under the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, the Firearms Act 1960, and an outstanding warrant.
He noted that the investigation is being carried out under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.
Kumar encouraged the public to continue providing information about crime and drug-related activities in their areas to assist the police in maintaining public safety and security. – March 8, 2025
