THE government will engage with industry stakeholders before rolling out the multi-tier levy mechanism (MTLM) later this year, announced Human Resources Minister Steven Sim.
Speaking at the Dewan Negara session today, Sim said the government will consult with relevant industry players and regulatory agencies to ensure smooth implementation.
"The various industry portfolios are closely linked to the policies of the ministry and other government departments. We will hold engagement sessions with all relevant stakeholders," Bernama quoted Sim saying.
He appealed for support from all parties involved, highlighting that the MTLM initiative is designed not only to restructure the labour market but also to boost the competitiveness of the industry and the nation’s economy.
"I seek the support from all parties including the industry, as this initiative will not only help restructure our labour market but also enhance the competitiveness of the industry and the country’s economy," he explained.
The minister was responding to Senator Tan Sri Datuk Low Kian Chuan's inquiry about the timeline for implementing the MTLM and whether the ministry had engaged with industry stakeholders.
The MTLM, a key feature of the 12th Malaysia Plan, aims to reduce Malaysia's reliance on foreign workers to below 15% of the total workforce.
In related news, Sim reiterated the government’s decision to maintain the freeze on foreign worker quota applications, a policy that has been in effect since March 18, 2023.
This move supports the goal of capping foreign employment at no more than 15% of the total workforce by 2025, in line with the government’s focus on prioritising local hires before filling vacancies with foreign workers. - March 10, 2025
