KL Mayor assures no demolition of Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple

KUALA Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif, has assured that the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple, located near Jalan Masjid India, will not face demolition. She confirmed that the temple can continue its operations as usual until the relocation process is completed.

Speaking at a press conference today, Maimunah emphasised that the actions taken by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) would fully comply with the principles of religious freedom guaranteed under the Federal Constitution.

“DBKL guarantees that every step being taken, both currently and in the future, will be in accordance with the principles of religious freedom as enshrined in the Constitution. The relocation process will be transparent, fair, and will involve consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure its smooth implementation,” she said.

Furthermore, the Mayor reiterated DBKL's commitment to ensuring that no demolition of the temple's structure would take place on the current site.

“The DBKL also assures that no demolition activities will be carried out at the temple’s existing location,” she added.

On the matter of the mosque development, Maimunah clarified that the government was aware of a proposal to build a mosque on land owned by a private company on Jalan Masjid India. She stressed that the mosque project was a private sector initiative and not a government proposal.

“The mosque project is a proposal by a private company, which is also the legitimate landowner. DBKL, as the body entrusted by the government, has proactively stepped forward to assist and find the best solution for all parties involved, while avoiding any form of discrimination,” she explained.

She highlighted that DBKL had identified a new location for the temple's relocation to ensure that Hindu worshippers could continue their religious practices in a comfortable and harmonious environment. – March 20, 2025
