Nancy Shukri urges Malaysians to stop using children as social media content

MINISTER for Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, has issued a strong call for the public to refrain from using children as content on social media, citing potential risks to their safety and well-being.

Speaking to the press after attending the Ramadan Donation and Bubur Asyura Distribution Ceremony in the Santubong parliamentary constituency, Nancy emphasised the responsibility of both parents and educators in protecting children from exploitation in the digital age.

“It is not just teachers but also parents and all of us who must be responsible by not using children as content on social media as it poses risks to them,” Nancy said.

Her comments came in response to earlier remarks by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who urged educators to be cautious when sharing images or videos of students, particularly primary school children, on social media. Fadzil's concern was the potential misuse of such content by irresponsible parties.

Nancy also revealed that Malaysia is considering introducing legislation similar to Australia’s, which prohibits children and teenagers from using social media platforms.

This law would aim to prevent the exploitation of minors through online content.

"We are still considering whether such a law is needed. That is why frequent reminders are issued against using children as content on social media," Bernama cited her saying.

On a separate note, Nancy addressed the ongoing flood situation affecting several states in Malaysia. She assured the public that the Social Welfare Department was prepared to suspend officers' leave if necessary to provide additional support at relief centres during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri period.

Regarding flood-related school closures in Johor, Nancy stated, “For floods that have led to school closures in Johor, we are also ready to assist if the Ministry of Education requires additional support from us. However, so far, the minister (Fadhlina Sidek) has said that everything is under control.”

As of 4 pm today, the flood crisis in Malaysia had escalated, with 11,776 victims seeking refuge at relief centres in Johor and 435 in Sarawak.
