POLICE have submitted three investigation papers (IPs) to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s (DPP) office in relation to the case of a medical doctor who was detained on suspicion of indecent behaviour at a hospital in Penang.
Datuk Hamzah Ahmad (pic), the Penang police chief confirmed that the police are now awaiting further instructions from the DPP regarding the 43-year-old male doctor. The case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, Bernama reported today.
Speaking at a press conference today, Hamzah provided further details about the case.
The doctor, who was arrested on February 26, had initially been detained following a report made by the hospital where he worked.
He was remanded but released on police bail on March 2.
However, the doctor was re-arrested on March 6 after allegations surfaced that he had committed a similar offence against another female patient at a private clinic in Pulau Tikus in 2023.
The situation escalated on March 10, when a foreign woman filed a police report claiming that the doctor had deceived her into undressing while performing a heart check-up at the same hospital on February 20.
Authorities are continuing to investigate these serious allegations.
In a separate matter, Bernama cited Hamzah also updated the public on the sale of firecrackers and fireworks in Penang. Police have issued 478 permits for the sale of such items between January 1 and March 21, including for the upcoming Aidilfitri celebrations.
Hamzah explained that a total of 486 applications had been received, but eight were rejected. These rejections were due to applicants' past criminal records or failure to secure the necessary business permits from the Penang City Council (MBPP) or the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP).
“The firecrackers and fireworks approved for sale are limited to types considered safe for use, even by children,” Bernama citedHamzah saying. “This precautionary measure is in place to prevent any accidents or untoward incidents during the festivities.” – March 24, 2025
