PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced aid for those affected by today's gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights.
Anwar said that homeowners affected by the blaze would get RM5,000 each, while victims who sustained injuries would receive RM2,500 each.
“The responsibility of restoring, fixing and replacing the affected residential areas, we (federal government, state government and Petronas) will take full responsibility.
“With that, please do not worry, but it will take time.
“The government and Petronas are talking about how we can take temporary measures, but it’s reasonable, as it takes a year, it’s not like floods, which is a week or two,” he said after visiting the affected area today.
Earlier today, a massive fire broke out at a Petronas gas pipeline in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, causing widespread panic as flames shot up into the air.
The heat from the flames — visible from kilometres away — were said to have melted plastic and metal located within a wide radius of the pipeline.
The gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, Selangor, was accompanied by multiple explosions that rattled the ground and set fire to several nearby homes, local authorities have confirmed.
The pipeline, located near residential areas, caused widespread damage and chaos as flames spread rapidly.
According to Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, the fire was fully extinguished by 3:45 pm today, though firefighters continue to battle smaller blazes in surrounding houses.
As of the latest update, 145 individuals have been reported injured and are receiving treatment at various hospitals, including Subang Jaya Medical Centre, Sunway Medical Centre, and others.
Amirudin confirmed that the property damage is extensive, with 190 homes, 148 cars, and 11 motorcycles destroyed in the blaze.
"The priority remains the safety and well-being of those affected. We are working closely with the Federal Government to ensure that the situation is managed and that all necessary assistance is provided to the victims," he said.
At present, local authorities are focusing on ensuring that the affected residential areas, located within a 290-metre radius of the fire, remain secure.
These zones have been designated as prohibited areas until a full assessment guarantees it is safe for residents to return.
Anwar has called for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the devastating fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, after being briefed on the situation by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) at the Incident Control Post in Jalan Putra Harmoni.
Anwar then visited the fire site himself to assess the situation firsthand.
Speaking to the press, Anwar reassured the public that an extensive investigation would be conducted to identify the cause of the fire, acknowledging that the investigation team would require some time to reach a conclusion.
He also confirmed that residents whose homes had been affected by the fire would not be allowed to return to their properties at this stage.
"The government will mobilise all necessary resources to ensure that displaced residents are provided with temporary housing," he said.
The Prime Minister took the opportunity to thank the security forces, including the police and fire services, as well as Petronas for their prompt action in handling the emergency.
He also expressed gratitude to local temple and mosque committees for their swift assistance to the affected residents.
"Our priority right now is ensuring safety, and everything appears to be under control at this moment. That’s why I chose to visit the site personally, to assure everyone that the situation is safe," Anwar added. – April 1, 2025
