Digital Ministry to replace damaged devices for Putra Heights fire victims

THE Digital Ministry of is set to assist residents affected by the recent gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights by replacing their damaged digital devices, including mobile phones and computers.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated that his ministry is focused on ensuring that those impacted by the disaster receive the necessary aid.

“My ministry is currently working to support the affected individuals, and this includes assistance from the offices of Members of Parliament and State Assembly Representatives,” he explained.

“I’ve also been informed that the investigation into the incident is still ongoing."

He added, “During my discussions with many of the affected residents, several mentioned that their devices had been damaged in the incident. We are now in the process of assessing how we can replace these devices, and we hope to make an announcement within the next couple of days.”

Gobind made these comments after visiting the incident site and meeting with the affected residents at the Incident Control Point (PKTK) in Putra Heights on Friday.

He also clarified that residents in need of device replacements can submit their applications through the relevant MP and ADUN offices.

“Those who require assistance, particularly in terms of device replacement, can apply at the offices of the ADUNs and MPs involved, and we will arrange this as soon as possible,” he added.

In related news, a total of 1,254 victims from 308 families have been identified as affected by the incident, with 630 individuals currently accommodated at two temporary evacuation centres (PPS). The remaining victims have sought refuge with relatives.

Meanwhile, families from 85 homes in Taman Harmoni, Putra Heights, have been allowed to return to their properties in phases, starting last night.

MEF backs government’s call for paid leave and flexible work for victims

In a new development,  the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) has voiced strong support for the Human Resources Ministry’s appeal for employers to grant paid compassionate leave and consider flexible work arrangements for employees impacted by the recent gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights.

MEF President Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman stressed the significant emotional and physical toll the fire has had on the affected individuals, urging employers to act with empathy and responsibility.

“MEF acknowledges that many employees affected by this incident are facing personal loss, displacement, and serious concerns for their families’ well-being,” he said in a statement. “It is crucial for businesses to adopt compassionate policies that support their staff while ensuring business continuity.”

He further pointed out that Section 60P of the Employment Act 1955 allows employers the flexibility to adjust working hours, workdays, and locations, enabling them to accommodate employees' needs during exceptional circumstances like this.

Syed Hussain also encouraged businesses to proactively support their employees by offering mental health resources, counselling services, and clear communication channels for those in distress.

“MEF commends employers who have already taken steps to assist their affected employees and urges businesses of all sizes to include these supportive measures as part of their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments,” he concluded.

In the aftermath of the gas pipeline explosion, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) confirmed that the fire, which broke out at 8:10 am on Tuesday, occurred at a key pipeline operated by Petronas Gas Bhd. It took nearly eight hours for the fire to be fully extinguished, leaving behind a crater approximately 9.8 metres deep and measuring 21 by 24 metres in size.
