Nancy Shukri: 235 residents affected by Putra Heights gas explosion receive counselling

A TOTAL of 235 residents affected by the recent gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights have sought counselling services as of Monday morning, according to Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, Minister for Women, Family and Community Development.

Speaking at a press conference after meeting with affected residents at the temporary relief centre (PPS) at Masjid Putra Heights, Nancy highlighted that her ministry had provided assistance based on the specific needs of individuals, particularly those from vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities (OKU).

"Through the counselling sessions at the Local Social Support Centre (PSSS), we have gained insight into what each individual requires. We’ve been addressing their specific needs, as opposed to offering a one-size-fits-all solution," she explained.

"Some residents have very specific needs, such as mobile phones due to urgent requirements. While we can't provide these to everyone, we assess each case individually. Interestingly, some have requested air purifiers due to having autistic children, while others who have recently given birth needed maternity clothing. We have provided these items where necessary," she added.

Nancy also shared that, despite the severity of the incident, only 0.7% of the affected residents have experienced significant trauma from the explosion.

"There are a few people who are traumatised, but they are a very small number – around 0.7%. Those with more severe trauma have already received medical treatment at hospitals," she stated.

Further elaborating on the support provided, Nancy revealed that more than 10 counsellors are stationed at the PSSS daily, offering round-the-clock support in three shifts.

"Thank goodness, every day there are no fewer than 10 counsellors on site. They work in shifts to ensure that help is available throughout the day. The residents often just need someone to talk to. While their issues are not always severe, many simply want to get out and breathe fresh air," she explained.

The explosion, which occurred at 8:10 AM last Tuesday, caused flames to rise over 30 meters high, with temperatures reaching 1,000°C. Firefighters took nearly eight hours to fully extinguish the blaze.

According to the Ministry of Health (KKM), 38 of the 146 victims are still receiving treatment at hospitals and clinics, with 18 being treated in government hospitals and the remaining 20 at private healthcare facilities. - April 7, 2025
