JUST days after returning to homes damaged by a massive gas pipeline fire on the second day of Aidilfitri, residents of Kampung Tengah in Puchong are now grappling with flash floods, adding to their ongoing distress.
According to a live update posted by TikTok user Qal Luniey, cited by Bernama, floodwaters began rising in the village late last night following continuous heavy rain.
“During the gas pipeline fire, my house was affected too, the entire roof was damaged.”
She added, “But on the day of the fire, I wasn’t home—I was back in my hometown, so it was just the house that was affected.”
Qal Luniey and her family only returned to their home last Sunday, hoping to begin the process of recovery. However, the unexpected floods have now thrown their plans into disarray.
As of 10am today, she reported that floodwaters remained at knee level but were slowly receding. She lives in the house with three other family members.
She also noted that this was not the first time Kampung Tengah had faced flooding, highlighting the area's long-standing vulnerability to extreme weather.
The earlier disaster, a dramatic gas pipeline explosion, occurred at 8:10am on 1 April and saw flames shoot more than 30 metres into the sky, with temperatures soaring to 1,000 degrees Celsius. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly eight hours before bringing it under control.
That fire left a trail of destruction in its wake: 81 homes were completely destroyed with structural damage exceeding 40%, another 81 were partially damaged, and 57 were affected without being burned. A total of 218 homes in the wider area—including Kampung Tengah—were reportedly unaffected.
Now, as floodwaters rise and anxiety mounts, residents are left asking how much more they can endure.
Elderly Stroke Victim Rescued
Meanwhile, a 75-year-old woman who was bedridden due to a stroke was rescued from rising floodwaters this morning, after her home in Taman Iswara, Sri Muda, Section 25, was inundated by sudden flash floods, Bernama reported today.
The swift response by personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) prevented a potentially tragic situation. The department received an alert about the elderly woman's condition at approximately 8.50am.
“Upon arriving at the location and conducting an assessment, it was confirmed that a flash flood had occurred involving a trapped elderly individual requiring evacuation... the victim was rescued and handed over to her family to be taken to a safe location," said Assistant Director of Operations for JBPM Selangor, Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar.
A fire engine and team of personnel have since been stationed in the area as a precaution, as floodwaters reportedly reached knee level in parts of Section 25.
Earlier, Ahmad Mukhlis reported that multiple districts across Selangor had been affected by flash floods following persistent early morning rainfall.
Among the hardest hit was the Petaling district, with water depths reaching up to 0.61 metres in several locations—including Kampung Tengah in Puchong, where around 20 homes were inundated.
Meanwhile, Shah Alam District Police Chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim confirmed that traffic monitoring efforts had been intensified in areas affected by flooding, such as Taman Sri Muda, Persiaran Budiman, Persiaran Jubli Perak, Persiaran Perusahaan, Section 23, Jalan Mat Raji, and Padang Jawa.
He added, monitoring was also underway in areas including Jalan Mantap, Section 25/129, and the Federal Highway’s motorcycle lane at KM15.3.
According to him, observations beginning at 7am showed that the flooding in Shah Alam and other affected areas was under control, with water levels beginning to recede. Traffic was reported to be flowing smoothly again as the rain began to ease.
“However, the motorcycle lane at KM15.3 of the Federal Highway remains completely closed for the time being.”
