PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a telephone conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba today, in which the two leaders exchanged views on a range of pressing international and regional matters, including the global impact of reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States.
In a statement posted to his official Facebook page, Anwar revealed that the conversation took place shortly after the state welcome ceremony for Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier in the day.
Among the key topics raised was Malaysia’s concern over the potential economic consequences of the ongoing tariff disputes involving the United States.
Anwar said he had reiterated Malaysia’s position and its ongoing engagement with ASEAN counterparts to present a united front in future discussions with Washington.
“Malaysia has conducted discussions with ASEAN leaders and conveyed the collective consensus to continue negotiations with the United States regarding this issue,” Anwar said.
He also expressed Malaysia’s appreciation for Japan’s interest in joining efforts to develop the ASEAN Power Grid — a regional initiative aimed at enhancing cross-border electricity connectivity and energy security across Southeast Asia.
The two leaders further explored opportunities for deepening bilateral cooperation in energy, particularly in the development of new energy sectors such as hydrogen. Anwar noted that this includes collaboration between Petronas, Malaysia’s national oil company, and the Sarawak state government.
“During the same conversation, we also touched on the progress of Malaysia–Japan bilateral cooperation, particularly in areas such as new energy development, including hydrogen initiatives involving Petronas and the Sarawak State Government,” he added.
Anwar also extended condolences to Ishiba over the recent loss of Japanese lives in the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on 28 March. He acknowledged Japan’s contribution to the humanitarian response and reconstruction efforts in the country.
“Malaysia appreciates Japan’s ongoing efforts and contributions in supporting the rebuilding of Myanmar,” Anwar said.
Quoting figures from Anadolu Agency via Myanmar Now, the earthquake has so far claimed 3,706 lives, with 5,017 reported injured and 130 individuals still missing as of Tuesday.
Anwar emphasised that the long-standing Malaysia–Japan relationship remains rooted in mutual respect, trust, and a shared commitment to advancing strategic cooperation across a wide range of sectors.
“Malaysia–Japan relations will continue to grow strong, anchored in respect, trust, and the long-term commitment of both nations in various strategic areas,” he said. – April 16, 2025
