THE Election Commission of Malaysia (EC) is aiming for more than 70 per cent voter turnout in the upcoming Ayer Kuning state by-election, set to take place this Saturday, April 26.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun urged voters to head to the polls early in light of the recent unpredictable weather conditions.

“For today’s early voting process, we are targeting more than 90 percent turnout from the 500 eligible early voters, comprising police personnel and their spouses,” Ramlan said.

He added that early voting, which began at 8am today at two centres — the Senior Officers' Recreation Hall, Battalion 3 of the General Operations Force (PGA) in Bidor, and the Anggerik Hall at the Tapah District Police Headquarters (IPD) — has so far proceeded smoothly.

“As of 9am, 22.8 percent of early voters had cast their ballots,” he told reporters when met outside the PGA hall in Bidor.

Ramlan also noted that all 24 early voters at the IPD Tapah centre had completed the voting process.

The Ayer Kuning by-election was called following the death of the former assemblyman, Ishsam Shahruddin, who passed away from a heart attack on 22 February.

The contest will see a three-way fight between Barisan Nasional’s Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, Perikatan Nasional’s Abd Muhaimin Malek, and Bawani KS of Parti Sosialis Malaysia.
