VOTERS in the Ayer Kuning state constituency will head to the polls tomorrow, concluding a 14-day campaign period in a closely watched three-way by-election.
A total of 31,315 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots to elect a new representative, following the death of incumbent assemblyman Ishsam Shahruddin in February, Bernama cited today.
Polling will take place across 19 centres involving 63 channels, open from 8am to 6pm, with the exception of Sekolah Kebangsaan Toh Tandewa Sakti, which is scheduled to close earlier at 4pm. Vote counting will be conducted at Dewan Merdeka.
The by-election sees Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir facing off against Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek and Bawani KS of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).
Dr Mohamad Yusri is set to vote at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Lesong, Abd Muhaimin at Sekolah Kebangsaan Ayer Kuning, and Bawani at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Pheng Lok.
Weather forecasts by the Malaysian Meteorological Department predict clear skies in the morning, though thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon, potentially affecting voter turnout later in the day.
Early voting was conducted last Tuesday, with 93.4 per cent of 500 police officers and their spouses casting their ballots at two designated polling stations.
A total of 601 Election Commission (EC) officers and 1,114 police personnel will be on duty to ensure the smooth conduct of the election.
This marks the eleventh by-election since the 15th General Election (GE15) in November 2022. During GE15, Ishsam Shahruddin, who also served as Tapah UMNO Chief, won the Ayer Kuning seat with a 2,213-vote majority in a five-way contest.
