ALL 19 polling centres for the Ayer Kuning by-election opened simultaneously at 8am today, with 63 voting streams available to accommodate the 31,281 registered voters expected to vote in the Perak state constituency.

Eighteen of the polling centres will operate until 6pm, while one—located at Sekolah Kebangsaan Toh Tandewa Sakti—will close earlier at 4pm.

The vote count will take place at the official tallying centre at Dewan Merdeka, with results anticipated at around 9pm tonight.

The by-election was triggered by the death of the seat’s incumbent, Ishsam Shahruddin, on February 22 following a heart attack. Ishsam, who also served as the Tapah UMNO division chief, secured the seat in the 15th General Election in November 2022 with a majority of 2,213 votes in a five-way race.

This by-election sees a three-cornered contest between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek, and Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s K.S. Bawani.

Dr Mohamad Yusri is scheduled to vote at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Lesong, Abd Muhaimin at SK Ayer Kuning, and Bawani at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Pheng Lok.

Last Tuesday, early voting was conducted for 500 police personnel and their spouses, with a turnout of 93.4 percent at two designated polling stations. - April 26, 2025
