DEPUTY Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching has issued a stern warning to the public not to fall for suspicious links that falsely claim to be official government websites, especially those related to financial aid.

“Scammers are circulating fake links, supposedly allowing users to check their STR (Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah) aid status via dubious websites shared through WhatsApp and other social media platforms,” Teo wrote in a Facebook post today.

“This is a scam!” she stressed, adding that such fraudulent schemes often use convincing messaging to trick unsuspecting users.

On 19 April, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil also warned the public to be vigilant and not to be duped by deceptive messages about STR assistance being spread via WhatsApp.

Fahmi explained that the unauthorised links could be exploited by online investment fraudsters or scammers aiming to gain access to users’ WhatsApp accounts.

“These messages often contain links that are not from verified sources and may be used to compromise your data or digital identity,” he said.

Both ministers reiterated that legitimate government websites will always end with “.gov.my”, and any variation should be treated as potentially malicious. - May 5, 2025
