MALAYSIA is prepared to expand its rice imports from key producing countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia to safeguard domestic food security in the event of disruptions caused by escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the government is proactively exploring alternative supply sources to ensure stable access to the staple grain, especially as approximately 38 percent of Malaysia’s imported rice—including white rice and basmati—comes from India and Pakistan.
“We can negotiate further with Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia for increased imports,” Mohamad told reporters during the launch of the Perak State Farmers’ Organisation's Certified Rice Seed Production Centre on Tuesday.
“Cambodia, for instance, has surplus rice and paddy. I’ve visited the country, and they welcome cooperation, including with Malaysian private companies looking to establish rice mills there,” he said.
The launch was officiated by Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.
Although rice imports from India and Pakistan remain unaffected at present, Mohamad noted the government is closely monitoring geopolitical developments in the region.
“There are no problems for now, but if war breaks out and their ports or machinery are affected, we must be ready,” he said.
“I believe both countries do not want a war. In fact, Russia and Iran are currently playing intermediary roles,” Mohamad added. - May 6, 2025
