THE Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) has set up a special committee to investigate the misuse of vape products, particularly among students, following recent cases that have gone viral on social media.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the committee was established in light of the full enforcement of Act 852 – the Tobacco and Smoking Products Control Act 2024.
The committee is chaired by Deputy Director-General of Health (Public Health) Dr Ismuni Bohari, with public health expert Professor Dr Lokman serving as adviser.
“We are aware of several cases that have gone viral on social media, including group use among students and a reported fatality linked to ‘beping’ (vape inhalation).
“However, preliminary investigations indicate other comorbid factors may have contributed, and these must be examined in detail before conclusions are made,” Dzulkefly said at a press conference after officiating the 2025 National Midwives and Nurses Day celebration at the National Cancer Institute on Tuesday.
He added that the ministry views the matter seriously and has directed the committee to urgently review current policies and enforcement under Act 852.
“This issue will be brought to the committee meeting soon to determine whether the current policy should be maintained or improved with new, more suitable recommendations.
“We want to ensure every decision is evidence-based and considers the full public health implications,” he said.
The minister reiterated MOH’s commitment to addressing vape-related misuse comprehensively to safeguard public safety.
Meanwhile, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said a proposal to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes and vape products in the state would be presented for further discussion at the upcoming State Executive Council (MMKN) meeting.
“I have instructed a paper to be drafted and presented to MMKN for consideration, as any decision by the state government must be holistic and account for all aspects to ensure the health of both current and future generations,” he said at a separate event in Selangor.
He noted that Selangor’s Public Health and Environment Exco, Jamaliah Jamaluddin, had been tasked with preparing the proposal following a joint meeting with relevant agencies including the Selangor State Health Department (JKNS), the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), and local authorities.
The integrated session was aimed at gaining a comprehensive understanding of enforcement, legal, and socioeconomic impacts related to vape sales.
On 24 April, media reported that the Terengganu government would enforce a state-wide ban on the sale of electronic smoking products in all premises starting 1 August. - May 13, 2025
