PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed confidence in facing any attempt to unseat him through democratic means, including a no-confidence vote in the Dewan Rakyat.
According to political analyst Professor Dr James Chin, however, such a move by the opposition bloc Perikatan Nasional (PN) remains improbable due to four main factors.
The Director of Asian Studies at the University of Tasmania said Anwar’s confidence is underpinned by his understanding that the opposition is unlikely to take the risk of tabling a formal motion in Parliament.
“First, PN does not have the numbers required to successfully carry a no-confidence vote. Currently, the government bloc commands around 150 Members of Parliament,” he said in a statement issued on Monday.
“Second, PN itself is uncertain of its actual level of support. Should they proceed, it would be a risky move as it would expose the real extent of their backing to all.”
“Third, Anwar would almost certainly win any confidence vote brought against him, making it more difficult for PN to table such a motion again, possibly not until after the next general election.”
“Fourth, a successful vote of confidence would strengthen Anwar’s political position further and make it harder for the opposition to challenge his leadership in the eyes of the public.”
Dr Chin concluded that as long as the coalition comprising UMNO, Pakatan Harapan (PH), and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) remains united, Anwar is unlikely to face any serious threat of a no-confidence vote.
Earlier, Anwar publicly challenged the opposition to table such a motion if they were confident of commanding majority support to topple the Unity Government.
Speaking at the monthly gathering of the Prime Minister’s Department on Monday morning, he said he was unafraid of any attempt to change the government, provided it was done through democratic channels.
“I told the Speaker (of Parliament), if there is a motion today, on the first day of the Dewan Rakyat sitting, I will be ready for the no-confidence vote. If there is a majority, go ahead,” he said.
Anwar also said he would not oppose a peaceful assembly planned for 26 July by certain groups demanding his resignation. However, the PH chairman reiterated that any change of government should not be brought about by pressure from the streets. - July 21, 2025
