Malaysia’s Border Agency denounces deepfake video of Director-General Mohd Shuhaily
The fake production and distribution of the clip constitute a deliberate act to tarnish the image, smear the reputation, and undermine Mohd Shuhaily’s integrity - August 6, 2025

MALAYSIA’s Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has refuted the authenticity of a viral TikTok video featuring its Director-General, Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, calling it a malicious deepfake produced using artificial intelligence (AI).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the agency confirmed that the 18-second video—posted by an account using the name ‘Hermono Kedutaan’—was entirely fabricated.

“The video is fake and created using AI technology,” the agency said. “Its production and distribution constitute a deliberate act to tarnish the image, smear the reputation, and undermine the integrity of Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily with the intent to manipulate and mislead the public.”

The agency warned the public not to be swayed by or share the video, reminding users that spreading false content is an offence under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“While technological advancements in AI are welcomed, their unethical misuse for defamatory purposes and to damage a person’s honour is wholly unacceptable,” the statement continued.

AKPS said it views the incident with utmost seriousness and pledged that legal action would be taken against those involved in producing or disseminating the deepfake.

The video in question allegedly depicts Mohd Shuhaily promoting a service named ‘Hermono’—purporting to assist individuals with passport and document-related issues.

“The agency strongly urges the public to exercise caution and refrain from engaging with or forwarding such content,” it added. - August 6, 2025
