PKR has received a letter of objection from Umno for allowing former members of the party into another party within the unity government.

This comes after Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz confirmed his membership with PKR after leaving Umno last week.

PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the objections would be brought to the Unity Government's Central Leadership Council meeting before the end of this month.

“We will bring this matter to the Central Leadership Council meeting before the end of this month, before the Merdeka celebration,” he said.

Yesterday, Umno President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that the party would soon issue a note of objection to the inclusion of the former Umno member into PKR.

According to him, he had voiced his objection to the president of the coalition party in the government, and it should be a convention that should be respected.

Last Thursday, Umno Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said they would deliver a note of protest to all coalition party leaderships in the Unity Government who are planning or have allowed members from Umno to join their parties.

This protest is a stern warning and if not addressed it could strain relations between the coalition parties.

On August 8, Tengku Zafrul, who is the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, confirmed that his application to join PKR had been accepted and that he is now a PKR member for the Ampang Branch.

Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation from Umno on May 30. – August 17, 2025
