THE dissemination of false news poses a serious threat to the proper administration of justice and could spark public unrest, Malaysia’s Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has warned.
Urging the public to refrain from sharing unverified claims, he said misinformation risks disrupting ongoing investigations and undermines confidence in law enforcement.
"We must carry out investigations professionally and transparently, based on credible evidence — not on emotion or hearsay from social media," he said in a statement quoted by Harian Metro.
Citing a recent case in Sabah, Saifuddin referred to the arrest of a schoolteacher who allegedly published a TikTok video claiming that a student’s death involved being “put into a washing machine”.
"When questioned, the individual claimed he merely wanted to 'create content', but the video was accepted as fact by parts of the public. Such actions cannot be allowed as they provoke dangerous sentiments," he said.
Saifuddin reaffirmed that the MADANI government remains committed to upholding truth through the proper legal channels rather than yielding to political pressure or street agitation.
"Trust that the police will carry out their duties with full responsibility. What we seek is the truth, and to bring the perpetrator to justice," he added. - August 23, 2025
